Medical education:
In 1993, Menachem Benifla received his bachelor’s degree in medicine from Ben-Gurion University in the Negev, Israel. Three years later, he became a doctor of medicine, graduating from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the same university.
Prof. Benifla’s internship in the field of neurosurgery was completed in 1997 and 1998 at the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva. After that, he underwent his residency, and successfully graduated in 2004. In 2002, Prof.. Benifla became a master in the management of health facilities at Ben-Gurion University. He also began training at the School of Business and Management in Beer Sheva.
Professional activity:
- From 2001 to 2004, Moni Benifla worked as a senior resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Soroka Medical Center, Beer Sheva. From February to June of 2004, he held the position of attending physician at the same medical center.
- In 2004, Prof. Benifla entered a clinical internship in children’s neurosurgery at the children’s hospital in Toronto, Canada, from which he successfully graduated in 2005.
- From 2006 to 2010, he worked as a pediatric surgeon in the neurosurgical department of the Soroka MC in Beer Sheva, specializing mainly in the surgical treatment of epilepsy in children. Then in 2010, he began to manage the children’s neurosurgical clinic, at the Department of Neurosurgery, in the Hadassah MC, Jerusalem Jewish University, Israel.
- Since 2016, Prof. Benifla has been in charge of the children’s neurosurgical unit in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rambam Hospital, Haifa. Here, he both performs and oversees operations for the treatment of epilepsy in children.
Teaching activities:
- Prof. Benifla has a wealth of experience in teaching. From 1997 to 2005, he worked as a clinical instructor at the neurosurgical department as a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University. At about the same time, he also held the position of coordinator and lecturer on behalf of the students of the medical faculty within the neurosurgical department of Rambam Hospital.
- From 1999 to 2002, Prof. Benifla taught curriculum and coordinated the interns of the surgical department at Ben-Gurion University. From 1999 to 2004, he was a clinical instructor for students of the medical faculty and additionally taught a course entitled “Emotional Awareness.” From 1998 to 2010, he also taught a course in neuroscience at the Rekannati Nursing School, Ben-Gurion University.
Prof. Benifla is currently engaged in the following teaching activities:
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev:
- Since 2002 – has been working as a coordinator and lecturer in Neuroanatomy with the Columbia Program for students of medical faculties from countries worldwide
- Since 2005 – has been delivering lectures at the Department of Human Anatomy
Jerusalem Hebrew University:
- Since 2010 – has lectured to students of the medical faculty, with a focus on four courses of study within the Department of Pediatrics
- Since 2010 – has lectured to the students of the medical faculty in their fifth year of training in the neurosurgical and pharmacological departments
- Since 2013 – has been recognized as a senior lecturer at the neurosurgical department
Scientific interests:
The chief professional interests of Prof. Benifla are pediatric brain tumors, epilepsy, congenital malformations of the central nervous system, and head trauma.
In response to the question as to what he liked best about his profession, Moni Benifla replied, “Seeing children recover from serious illnesses.”
